Monday’s Musings #259 & March Daybook

March Daybook & Monday's Musings #259 | What Joy Is Mine

Today is March 26, 2017.

The weather has cooled a bit and the wind has made his face more known. I’m not a big fan of strong winds but it is spring weather for us here and that means lots of wind. I tend to straighten my hair more when the winds are strong. Curly hair and wind are not good friends. I end up with more knots in my hair than I like.

I am missing our friend who came to visit. We enjoyed loving on him and showing him some cool things about NM. He was such a joy and I look forward to visiting with again soon, Lord willing. Best part was having my house full of family every day! I am definitely not ready for the empty nest season although it is not too far off. So, I am soaking in each day that my kids are here.

We are preparing for a marriage in our family. It’s an exciting time! It will be a simple wedding and taking place this summer. And we have another in a courtship. It blows my mind to be here in this season of life where our children are in relationships pursuing marriage. I can still remember them as wee ones needing their mama to tie their shoes or give them a glass of milk or hug away their fears. However, we love the two people God has put in our children’s lives and pray over them and our children daily.

Physically, I have changed up my exercise routine a bit. I am doing a 30 day challenge on my phone. It is strength training with spurts of aerobics. I needed something different as I was getting burnt out on what I was doing. Also, this new challenge is definitely challenging me. I like that. Makes me want to stick with it. I’ve also upped my food changes. Both combined, I’ve lost 5 pounds so far. I’ll take it.

At church today, the guest preacher taught on gluttony. He only used food and drink as items we can go overboard with in discussing gluttony. Yet as I was sitting there listening, I began to think of how gluttony can apply to other things as well. Television, computer time, and Facebook are some that come to mind. Even things like reading and exercise can be gluttonous. Any time we do something in excess (exceeding a prescribed or desirable amount), we run the risk of being gluttonous. However, gluttony can be conquered. The remedy is removing the gluttonous thing and living out Psalm 34:8, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” Put in the place of what excessively draws our heart, a focus on Christ and His love for us. Desire to spend time with the Lord and seek Him for discipline. Instead of running to those things that will cause us to stumble, we need to run our “strong tower” and find refuge. (Proverbs 18:10) These are my thoughts on gluttony.

Just thinking, April is practically here. Can you believe we are out of winter and into spring according to the calendar? This is the time I began planning my garden, which I will plant closer to May. We usually get one more freeze before planting can be done. I also go through my clothes before packing away my winter outfits. I’ve already been spring cleaning (began in January) so I will continue to work on those few last projects I have on my list. We also have a couple of trips planned we will need to finalize details on. What does spring hold for you?

I really enjoyed the live action movie, “Beauty and the Beast.” I liked the character development of some of the characters and the new song sung by the Beast is a new fav of mine. Beauty and the Beast retains the message of looking to the heart and not the appearance which I appreciated as well. The actors they chose I thought were good choices for the parts they played. I laughed, I got teary-eyed, I adored, and I am glad I went to see it. Now if you are against Disney or this movie, I respect that. However, I would recommend seeing the movie before passing judgement. You may be surprised.

I am thankful for sweet people in my life, cupcakes, opportunities to serve others, and sunshine!

Favorite sayings: “Impress the young convert from the very beginning with the coviction that God has called him into His kingdom to struggle with the corruptions of his heart.” (William B. Sprague)

How are you today? And what will you share? I am glad you are here.

Monday’s Musings #256 & February Daybook

February Daybook & Monday's Musings #256 | What Joy Is Mine

Today is March 5th, 2017.

The weather is cool because the wind blowing is chilly. It’s a high of 68 degrees but feels like 50 degrees.

The book I am reading “The Pursuit of God” by A.W. Tozer, is one I am really enjoying. Some of you have probably read it but it is new to me. My book list is long so I am glad to be getting to this one.

A craft project I finished in two afternoons were these Mickey and Minnie pillows for the sofa in our Disneyland room. It was such a treat to be sewing again. It’s been a long time since I’ve sat down at my sewing machine and made anything. I used to quilt a lot but have gotten away from it. Maybe I will be able to pick it up again.

A new skill I am learning is calligraphy and hand lettering. If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, I sometimes post my progress. Practice makes better and I can see growth each time I sit down to write. I love this new skill and look forward to the time I can sit and work on it.

I am looking forward to a visit from a friend of our family’s. He will be spending a week with us. We hope to show him some cool things about our city and state. But mostly, we are looking forward to our time with him.

Healthwise, I have been sticking to my workout regimen of cardio and strength training. Sometimes I have to push myself to get it done but when I’m finished, I love that I did something good for my health. With the weather warming up, going on walks is given. I  love walking for exercise!

A favorite pastime is antiquing. I love looking through old forgotten things. I have a favorite antique store I visit every few months. I spread out my visits so I see new things. I recently found a wingback chair I adored. I have been looking for a “new” chair for my sitting area in our bedroom. I was ready to be rid of the 11 year old chaise chair. A trip to my favorite antique store lead me to the chair that I’ve been waiting for. Here is a photo of the chair! I absolutely love it!!

I am watching Star Trek: The Next Generation series with our youngest son. Well, he’s over 20 years old but still the youngest of our two boys. We are presently in season 3 and moving right along. We usually will try to catch two or three episodes in a row if we can. Some episodes we’ve had to skip due to content but other than those we are enjoying the series. It’s been a long while since I’ve watched it.

I am grateful for time with my children, for this blog and all who visit, and for the ability to learn something new.

A favorite quote:God’s aim in all His doings of grace is to ‘hide pride from man'; to hinder boasting; to keep the sinner humble.” (Horatius Bonar)

Another link up is here. It humbles me to see how the Lord has grown this community. I appreciate you being here.

Monday’s Musings #252 & January Daybook

January Daybook & Monday's Musings #252 | What Joy Is Mine

Today is January 29, 2017.

The weather is really nice. Not too cold and sunny. Supposed to have nice sunny weather all week.

I am presently enjoying a quiet afternoon at home. It’s the Lord’s Day and it ought to be restful. We’re watching a 1936 movie with our kids at the moment. Do you like old movies?

I finished my goal setting earlier this month. So far, I have been able to work toward some of them. I like to do a monthly check in to see where I am with each one. This helps me stay focused and intentional.

We have been tentatively planning our future trips. Planning early helps us afford it financially as well as encourage us to hold each detail in prayer. It is my prayer we get to do all we are hoping to.

Some of the books I am hoping to read this year are in my hands now. I am starting with “Does Grace Grow Best In Winter?” by Ligon Duncan. This book answers the questions: What is suffering for? What does it look like from the standpoint of God’s sovereignty? It looks like a quick read with, hopefully, a good message.

Our family bible time consists of two things. We are reading through the New Testament using this plan. We are also continuing our study through The Shorter Catechism using Training Hearts, Training Minds. We’re on question #42 this week. We often have good biblical discussion and I am loving this time with my kids.

I am excited about baseball season! With the Super Bowl this upcoming weekend, I am ready to close out football and watch some baseball. Do you like baseball? Do you have a favorite team?

Spring cleaning has begun in our home. I’ve tackled the master bath and my bookshelf in our bedroom. I’ve also begun to clean out and reorganize our pantry. I am excited to be making good progress in decluttering and reorganizing areas in our home. Spring cleaning doesn’t have to happen in spring friends.

At our church, we are starting up our community groups once more. We will be in a different group and are excited to see how God will grow us up in Him during our time together. It’s a blessing to fellowship with fellow believers.

I am grateful for a new year, for goals to work towards, for a God who hears my prayers, and for praise.

A favorite quote: My brethren, let me say, be like Christ at all times. Let us take care that we exhibit our Master, and not ourselves—so that we can say, “It is no longer I that live, but Christ that lives in me.”  (Charles Spurgeon)

Monday’s Musings #247 & December Daybook

December Daybook & Monday's Musings #247 | What Joy Is Mine

Today is December 25th, 2016. Christmas Day.

The weather is cold. And we woke up this morning with snow on the ground. Got a little white Christmas.

Our Christmas Eve was truly blessed. We spent the early evening worshiping at our church in a sweet service honoring the birth of our Savior and rejoicing with church family. Ended the evening with family, good food and conversation.

Christmas Day, we spent it with more family eating delicious food, playing games and laughing. I am always bummed when its over and all go home. It just seems to go by so fast.

I learned two new games today. A board game called “Let’s Have Church” and a card game called “Chaos.” Chaos had us laughing and requires much thinking. It was good times! Do you play games with your family?

New Years Day is around the corner. We don’t go out New Year’s Eve but instead enjoy an evening at home playing games, eating and counting down to midnight. New Year’s Day is our son’s birthday so we do remember him and his birth that day. We miss him.

A challenge I faced was standing in front of a crowd to lead a reading of scripture at church. I stumbled a bit but found my way. It’s one thing to read the scripture by myself in front of a crowd and another to lead and read with the crowd. It was out of my comfort zone but I am glad I did it.

One thing I love is old movies. I am fond of good movie making without CGI sometimes. Back then they relied on real acting and good storytelling to make the movie worth watching.

I am looking forward to having things settle down a bit. The holidays are always a busy season for us. Hopefully, as they pass, the days will become simpler and less stress-filled.

It is time to start looking ahead a bit. Time to start planning and goal setting for the new year. I am praying over this and asking God how He would have me redeem the time He has given me. Are you goal setting and planning for 2017?

I am thankful for family, for Posole, my study in 1 John and for the birth of Jesus.

Favorite quote:Once in our world, a stable had something in it that was bigger than our whole world.” (C.S. Lewis)

Can you believe we made to through another year of link ups? And this being our last one for 2016 ought to be as good as the rest. Thank you for faithfully linking up and being a wonderful presence here. What have you to share today?

Monday’s Musings #245 & November Daybook

November Daybook & Monday's Musings #245 | What joy Is Mine

We are in the last month of 2016. Just saying that blows my mind. November came and went so quickly. Since I shared our vacation last week, I wasn’t able to share my November daybook. So that’s what we are doing this week!

Today is December 3rd, 2016

The weather is sunny and chilly. We had our pellet stove this morning to take the chill down a bit but its off now because the sun decided to make an appearance. What temps are you living with today?

Our vacation time in Disneyland was a such sweet trip. You can read about it HERE and HERE. Our kids really look forward to this particular trip each year and we start saving for it as soon as this month! God willing we can go next year, too.

Spiritually, I am now working through a study on 1 John by Susan Heck called, “With the Master:Before the Mirror of God’s Word.” So far it has been real good but I’m just getting started. And My daughter is doing with me.

Creatively, I plan to begin work on a jar quilt for my daughter this week. It is a jar quilt of things she has liked and does like. I know, you’re probably thinking nothing like starting late but I’m confident I can get it done before Christmas. I haven’t quilted in ages so I’m excited to be making a quilt again.

Our Thanksgiving was really nice. Had family over, ate good food and watched the Cowboys play ball. (P.S. They are having an exceptional season.) I love Thanksgiving and being with family.

Decorating our home for Christmas is done. I love the way our home looks when it is prepared for the season. Even better, I was able to go through and remove items that we no longer displayed and get them donated. Did you declutter your Christmas decorations?

Our family devotional for Christmas is Bonhoeffer’s book titled “God Is In the Manger: Reflections On Advent and Christmas.” We’ve read through this before and decided to go through it again. His book keeps your heart focused on Jesus. What are you doing for your family devotion time during this Christmas season?

Our church is having their first membership inductions this Sunday. For a church plant, this is exciting! We are a small church but God has shown Himself faithful to our church. It’s so humbling to see God moving. He is good!

My favorite Christmas movie is “It’s A Wonderful Life.” Actually, its my favorite movie of all time. Do you have a favorite movie you watch this time of the year?

Looking ahead, this month on WJIM’s Facebook page, we are doing a 25 day mini scriptural study to know Christ better. Since we celebrate His birth this month, it’s a good study to help keep us focused on Him. I share names of Christ, scripture to support that name and a brief insight into the scripture. At the end, I will be offering FREE printable cards to keep us reflecting on Jesus throughout the year. I’ll even share a project to use with the printable.

I am grateful to be in good health, for family memories, for a good night’s rest, and for football.

A favorite quote:The Son of God became a man to enable men to become sons of God.” (C.S. Lewis)

Another link up is upon us and I know you have great posts to share. Thank you for being a part of this community.
