Lads & Ladies of Wisdom Review & Giveaway

Lads & Ladies of Wisdom Review & Giveaway | What Joy Is Mine

Kathie has done it again. Kathie, at The Character Corner, and author of Little Lads and Ladies of Virtue, has put together another fabulous faith building curriculum. I had the awesome joy of reviewing Little Lads and Ladies of Virtue that I couldn’t wait to dig into her newest curriculum for children: Lads & Ladies of Wisdom.

Lads & Ladies of Wisdom is the next curriculum study to follow Little Lads and Ladies of Virtue. It’s a 20 week – 20 topic study for young children covering the importance of being a biblically wise person. Some of the topics covered are consequences of a foolish person, choosing friends wisely, receiving counsel and instruction, avoiding evil and trusting God to name a few. Each lessons is designed to be taught in 5-10 minutes a day making this an easy way to begin your homeschool day.

All the topics are based on scripture found in the book of Proverbs, which I believe every parent should read and work through with their children more than once while they still live at home. The lessons there are crucial to teaching our children the importance of having wisdom in life. As Kathie says, “to grow in the character traits of a wise person.

This curriculum is designed for grades 1st through 6th and does include activity cards and sheets to bring each topic home for the child. There are also coloring pages. Lads & Ladies of Wisdom Curriculum has 5 days of lessons to reiterate that week’s lessons which includes a memory verse, fun activities to apply what they have learned, 3-4 KEYS that relate to the character quality in their daily life, games, object lessons and a daily prayer to encourage application in their life.

The ultimate goal of Lads & Ladies of Wisdom is “to train our children to love God and become more like Him.” Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)

Little Lads and Ladies of Wisdom Activity and Copywork book | What Joy Is Mine

In addition, there is also a Copywork and Activity book to use alongside the study. It includes manuscript and cursive copywork of the memory verse and keys for each lesson. This will give them handwriting practice, while also helping to reinforce what they are learning in the daily lessons. Also included are additional fun activities for the kids to do, like word search puzzles, crossword puzzles, match-ups, and word scrambles.

Now that you have a good idea of what Lads & Ladies of Wisdom is all about, it’s giveaway time. Kathie is so sweet to allow WJIM give away one copy of Lads and Ladies of Wisdom (workbook not included) to two separate winners! That’s right! You have the opportunity to win a copy to use in your home with your children. Our giveaway will run until Saturday, April 18th, and the winners will be announced on Monday, April 20th, at our Monday’s Musings link up. I am so excited to host this giveaway and want to thank Kathie for being so generous. Enter below and be sure to check out Lads & Ladies of Wisdom.

5 Sure Ways To A Stress-Free Homeschool

5 Sure Ways To A Stress-Free Homeschool | What Joy Is Mine

Homeschooling your children can be overwhelming. In feeling overwhelmed, it can cause you to rethink why you do it? If God has called you to it, you can bet He will provide all you need to be successful at it. I am at the end of our homeschool journey and I wanted to share 5 sure ways to have a stress-free homeschool. This is what has worked for our family through the years and helped us have JOY in our homeschooling years.

1. Be prepared and organized. This can’t be stressed enough. If you try to wing it, you will find it more frustrating than productive. So, be prepared. Know what you are going to do and when you’re going to do in your day. Make a schedule and stick with it as best you can. I know things will come up but if you have a schedule, you can pick up where you left off or jump ahead a bit in your day and finish up. Also, if you are organized and know where everything is, you will find this will help in keeping stress at bay as well. I promise you that being prepared will eliminate so much stress in your schooling agenda.

2. Take breaks. This is just as needed as a schedule. Plan snack times, nap times and play periods in your homeschooling day. If the weather permits it, go outside and let the children run around. Breaks will encourage better productivity and make school fun. Your children won’t think its all about books but about fun, too. You will enjoy the break, as well, mama. The brain does need rest, too.

3. Plan a read aloud time. This could be a break time or just make it a part of your schooling schedule. It’s a good way to snuggle up with your children giving everyone a break from their studies. Our children always looked forward to read aloud time especially when we moved onto chapter books. Sometimes, they would color while I read. Other times they just listened.

4. Make it fun. School should be inviting and adding some fun does aid with that. If your children find it appealing, it makes teaching them so much easier and stress-free. You can add in some hands on activities like coloring, art and science projects, scavenger hunts, and plays they can act out. How about having a music day, movie day, or pajamas day? And don’t forget to schedule in field trips once in a while.

5. Keep it all in prayer. We homeschool because the Lord called us to it so what better way to protect it from stress than to go to the Lord about all concerns. Pray over your teaching abilities, your children’s heart in learning and how it should look for your family dynamics. God is faithful and will answer your prayers for a stress-free school.

Homeschooling our children can be stress-free and we can have a hand in that by doing the five things listed above. Stress will only make us impatient, irritable and cause us to teach with a short fuse which benefits neither us nor our students. Instead, seek to keep it free of things or situations that can cause it to be stressful.

How do you keep your homeschool stress-free?

The Johnny Appleseed Story (Guest Post from Christianity Cove)

The Johnny Appleseed Story | Guest Post from Christianity Cove | What Joy Is Mine

The Johnny Appleseed Story

Johnny Appleseed is a fond memory for many from when we were growing up. A great American Legend, Johnny Appleseed was a real person. Born John Chapman on September 26, 1774, he was among the American settlers who were captivated by the movement west across the continent. As Johnny Appleseed traveled west, he planted apple trees along the way, and sold trees to settlers. With every apple tree that was planted, the legend grew.

Here are some additional facts:

  • John Chapman was a nurseryman who started out planting trees in western New York and Pennsylvania.
  • During the life of John Chapman, the “West” was places like Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois.
  • John Chapman was a deeply religious person. He was known to preach during his travels.
  • According to legend, Johnny Appleseed led a simple life and wanted little. He rarely accepted money and often donated any money he received.
  • It is believed by many that he died on March 11, 1845, from what was referred to as the “winter plague.”

There is a lot of “legend” in stories written about Johnny Appleseed. By its definition, over the years, legends grow bigger than life. It also appears that there is some link between Johnny Appleseed and very early Arbor Day celebrations.

Johnny Appleseed can also help us understand the scriptures of the Parable of the Sower.

MATTHEW 13:2‐9

“A FARMER WENT OUT TO SOW HIS SEED. AS HE WAS SCATTERING THE SEED, SOME FELL ALONG THE PATH, AND THE BIRDS CAME AND ATE IT UP. SOME FELL ON ROCKY PLACES, WHERE IT DID NOT HAVE MUCH SOIL. IT SPRANG UP QUICKLY, BECAUSE THE SOIL WAS SHALLOW. BUT WHEN THE SUN CAME UP, THE PLANTS WERE SCORCHED, AND THEY WITHERED BECAUSE THEY HAD NO ROOT. OTHER SEED FELL AMONG THORNS, WHICH GREW UP AND CHOKED THE PLANTS. STILL OTHER SEED FELL ON GOOD SOIL, WHERE IT PRODUCED A CROPA HUNDRED, SIXTY OR THIRTY TIMES WHAT WAS SOWN. WHOEVER HAS EARS, LET THEM HEAR.”

Johnny Appleseed said during his preaching that his apple trees came from the planting of many seeds, some of which did not take root. We need to be the trees that take root. We also need to be sowers, speaking God’s word often, and not caring if more than half of it never takes root.

Johnny Appleseed Snack: Apples with Cinnamon

This very easy snack will help kids understand what Johnny Appleseed was trying to do with his life. It can inspire kids to want to be more “fruitful” in their own lives.

Material

• Apples
• Clear plastic bowl with lid
• Cinnamon
• Spoon

Introduction

These apples we are eating today may in fact have come from some of the apple trees planted by Johnny Appleseed! Johnny Appleseed spent his life proving the point that the greatest, most beautiful things can start with one tiny seed. Let’s remember in our lives that one seed sewn of love, courage, faith and hope can be multiplied in others. The positive things we have to say and do are very important, even when we feel like they’re not.

Let’s eat these apples, thinking of the huge and majestic trees from which they came, and thinking of how we can be “one seed” nicer and kinder to others.

Instructions

1. Cut apples into quarters and remove seeds and core.
2. Place apples in the clear plastic bowl.
3. Sprinkle with cinnamon.
4. Stir so that all the apple slices are covered.
5. Place lid on bowl quickly so apples don’t brown.
