Diving Into the Word of God Using 6 Easy Steps

Diving Into the Word of God Using 6 Easy Steps | What Joy Is Mine

It’s a new year with new opportunities to grow in our faith. Although we can start at any time, there is something motivating about doing it at the beginning of the year. It’s a like a new start. We, sometimes, need new starts, right? Well, let’s discuss how we can take our new year and grow in the knowledge of God’s commandments by diving into His Word in 6 easy steps.

Diving into the Word of God encourages us to love it all the more. We are reminded it is the inerrant and infallible words spoken by our Father. Reading it daily and digging deep gives us a better understanding of God, who He is and what’s expected of us by Him.

Diving into the Word, or studying the Bible, is not something we do just because. We do it with intentional purpose. We plunge into the words written by our supreme Lord intending to come away with wisdom only He can give that will help us live for His glory and for our greater good. “My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.(Proverbs 3:1-2)

Here are six ways we can dive into the Word of God intentionally

1. Make the appointment. We need to pray and ask the Lord to show us when to meet with Him. It may not be the same for you as for another person. Once we know when, we make that appointment and stick to it daily.

2. Bring your supplies. That would be our Bible, a notebook, pen and receptive heart. Simple and sweet. We won’t need more than that to begin this diving in of God’s Word.

3. Pray for wisdom and understanding. Before we begin reading, we need to ask for discernment of what He has led us to read. He is faithful and we need to seek Him in all things, especially when we read the Bible and study it.

4. Read thoroughly and completely. Make it a habit to read through the entire section completely. It would benefit us even more to read the before and after sections as well. This will give us a bigger and better picture of what is being taught.

5. Take notes and make notes. After we have read it through once, we go back through and read it again, this time taking notes as we are moved. After we have written those down, we need to go back and make notes on what we have read. This may include definitions of certain words, researching commentaries, and logging other scripture references.

6. Express thankfulness. After we have finished, we need to go to the Lord and thank Him for that time with Him and His Word. Thank Him for wisdom gained and for meeting with us.

These 6 simple steps will help us have a deeper and more intimate time with our Lord. It is the approach I personally take when doing a study in God’s Word. I do come away with greater understanding for God is faithful.

7 Days of Joy: Scripture In the Heart

7 Days of Joy: Scripture in the Heart | What Joy Is Mine

On Day 5 we are looking at joy in hiding the Word of God in our heart.

Scripture memorization is an important part of being a child of God. Hiding the Word in our heart can only bless us and bring us joy. I have found it amazing how scripture filed away in my heart will surface at just the right moment. God is faithful to bring it to mind if we store it in our heart. “My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart.” (Proverbs 4: 20, 21)

We are commanded, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.” (Colossians 3:16)

So, let’s look at how we can hide the Word of God in our heart.

1. Make it important. That’s the first step to putting scripture in our heart. We have got to desire to do it. Plain and simple friends. Memorizing scripture takes work so you must be in it wholeheartedly.

2. Determine to do it daily. Anything we wish to memorize must be kept at daily. In order for us to get the Word into our heart, we must practice and recite it daily. We must be committed and faithful to the task. It will bless you immensely.

3. Know the bible & the wisdom contained therein. Read your Bible daily and often. The more familiar you are with it, the easier it will be to retain it in your heart. It says in Proverbs 2, verse 6, “For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” It’s in the Word of God that the wisdom we need to live our life is given.

4. Make it visible and applicable. Write down the verses you want to memorize and place them strategically around your house so you see them readily. Read them aloud each time you see it and repeat once more. Go a step further and study that verse so you not only memorize it but you fully understand what it means. This will help in the memorizing of it. We don’t want it to just be words we can recite. We want to embrace what we are hiding in our heart.

5. Pray and ask. James 1, verse 5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” If we seek God’s guidance in hiding His Word in our heart, He is faithful to help us along. But we must “ask in faith, without doubting.” (James 1: 6) And we must trust the Holy Spirit to bring it to mind. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” (John 14:26)

Adam Houge writes, “When you increase your understanding of God’s Word, it changes how you think, act, walk, and breathe.” Hiding God’s Word in our heart gives us the opportunity to ponder and glean wisdom from itGod’s word in our heart will dictate how we live and encourage us to be more Christ-like in all things. That is the joy of hiding the Word of God in your heart. Psalm 119:9 says, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.” In addition, once it is hidden there, it cannot be removed. “I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.” (Psalm 119:16)

It is evident in the Scriptures that the Lord wants us to hide His Word in our heart. Psalm 1, verse 2 says, “But whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.” One way we delight and meditate on the Word is by retaining it in our heart. It is in doing this we gain knowledge and wisdom to live a life that pleases God. And it should bring us much joy to live a life that honors and pleases our Lord.

I also see it this way: if my Bible is not handy, God’s Word in my heart is! It goes where I go and I am never without it.

Monday’s Musings #163

Keeping it short today. I am doing better but still on my meds, essential oils and probiotics. It’s coming along. And thank you for the well wishes and prayers. I so coveted and needed them this last week.

Isaiah 64:8 | What Joy Is Mine

Above is my latest scripture print in our boutique. I love the reminder in this scripture verse, Isaiah 64:8, that God is the one who shapes and prunes us to be more like Him in all things. If we ever feel like life is throwing us curve balls and in the moment we don’t understand it, we can always look to this verse to know that what we endure is not in vain. When all is said and done, it will be just what the Potter had in mine for His glory and our good.

Each and every week you all share wonderful posts. Thank you. What’s going on this week at your blog?

Monday’s Musings #155

Philippians 4:19 | What Joy Is Mine | NCPhotography

Hi friends. It’s another Monday. Yes, it’s a good day. God has given us another day of life and breath. Another day to hug our children and teach them. Another day to love on our husbands and respect them. Another day to get it right and to be right with Him. Today let’s take the time to appreciate our blessings. Look around you and see how much the Lord loves you. From your morning coffee to your quiet time with Him to your babies needing your attention to the laundry that needs to be done—it’s a good day to appreciate your blessings.

We had a good number of posts last week. Thank you for blessing others–and me! What will you share this week?
