Monday’s Musings #256 & February Daybook

February Daybook & Monday's Musings #256 | What Joy Is Mine

Today is March 5th, 2017.

The weather is cool because the wind blowing is chilly. It’s a high of 68 degrees but feels like 50 degrees.

The book I am reading “The Pursuit of God” by A.W. Tozer, is one I am really enjoying. Some of you have probably read it but it is new to me. My book list is long so I am glad to be getting to this one.

A craft project I finished in two afternoons were these Mickey and Minnie pillows for the sofa in our Disneyland room. It was such a treat to be sewing again. It’s been a long time since I’ve sat down at my sewing machine and made anything. I used to quilt a lot but have gotten away from it. Maybe I will be able to pick it up again.

A new skill I am learning is calligraphy and hand lettering. If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, I sometimes post my progress. Practice makes better and I can see growth each time I sit down to write. I love this new skill and look forward to the time I can sit and work on it.

I am looking forward to a visit from a friend of our family’s. He will be spending a week with us. We hope to show him some cool things about our city and state. But mostly, we are looking forward to our time with him.

Healthwise, I have been sticking to my workout regimen of cardio and strength training. Sometimes I have to push myself to get it done but when I’m finished, I love that I did something good for my health. With the weather warming up, going on walks is given. I  love walking for exercise!

A favorite pastime is antiquing. I love looking through old forgotten things. I have a favorite antique store I visit every few months. I spread out my visits so I see new things. I recently found a wingback chair I adored. I have been looking for a “new” chair for my sitting area in our bedroom. I was ready to be rid of the 11 year old chaise chair. A trip to my favorite antique store lead me to the chair that I’ve been waiting for. Here is a photo of the chair! I absolutely love it!!

I am watching Star Trek: The Next Generation series with our youngest son. Well, he’s over 20 years old but still the youngest of our two boys. We are presently in season 3 and moving right along. We usually will try to catch two or three episodes in a row if we can. Some episodes we’ve had to skip due to content but other than those we are enjoying the series. It’s been a long while since I’ve watched it.

I am grateful for time with my children, for this blog and all who visit, and for the ability to learn something new.

A favorite quote:God’s aim in all His doings of grace is to ‘hide pride from man'; to hinder boasting; to keep the sinner humble.” (Horatius Bonar)

Making Church A Priority

Making Church A Priority | What Joy Is Mine

I read somewhere to never start a post with Scripture. I have never understood why. How can beginning a conversation with a word from God be wrong? So, here I go: “Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:25)

Our family has attended three biblical sound churches in the last 25 years. We are currently at one we love. The gospel message and the teaching of God’s Word is prevalent. We have grown to adore the pastor and his family. We have met some awesome people and made some new friends. We serve in the church and look forward to service each Sunday. In the year it has been publicly opened (it is a church plant), we have missed no more than 5 Sundays total as a family. I’m not bragging here but making the point that we see the value and importance of church in our lives.

To us, church is a vital component to the Christian’s walk. In church, we learn to live as God commands us to. We not only hear this truth in the message given by our pastor but we get to see it in action and are given opportunities to live it out ourselves.

We are exposed to the gospel in teaching and in living. Church is one place we find spiritual filling for our souls. We grow there and find encouragement from fellow believers. In addition, we get to encourage others to a stronger faith in our Lord. We’re reminded “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” (Matthew 18:20) In a church where the gospel is taught and where the children of God humbly strive to live as commanded by the Lord, God is present.

We have seen, in some Christian families, that church is not a priority. It’s more like an “if I feel up to it” approach to attending. Church attendance should not be based on how we “feel” but more on what God says about it. In Exodus 20, we are told to “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.” This is considered a duty to God and not a choice on our part. As Matthew Henry says, “Neglected duties remain duties still, notwithstanding our neglect.” I believe we need that time of worship and fellowship to grow in our faith and in our walk with the Lord. It should not be neglected.

So, how can we make church a priority?

Let me say right off the bat that illnesses or serious life situations are not being considered here. It is necessary to point out that sometimes church is missed for circumstances that warrant us to stay home or be somewhere else. What I am talking about here is an willingness to miss church just because you want to.

One way to be sure church is on our agenda is to get involved. Sign up to help in areas that fit our strengths. Pray and seek the Lord in this. He will show you where to serve in the church.

Another way not to miss church is to get to know the people you worship alongside with. Simply said: make friends! There is accountability in others knowing who you are and vice versa. I look forward to seeing the congregation and talking with them. We were designed for community. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” (Colossians 3:16)

Thirdly, prepare the evening before church. Set out your clothes and your bible. If you know what will be preached on, maybe read ahead the scripture and be ready to receive the message on it. Get your children ready as well and build excitement about going.

Lastly, pray that God would stir an eagerness in you to be at church and among other fellow believers.

If you have not found a bible teaching and Gospel believing church, pray and seek the guidance of the Lord. Ask Him to lead you to the church He has for you. Then, make it an appointment to attend regularly.

Monday’s Musings #255 & Never Alone

Never Alone & Monday's Musings #255

This week I had lunch with a dear friend. We are in the same season of life. It was a blessing not only to visit but to feel comfortable in sharing what we are going through these days. It’s not anything major but for both of us, it’s taking us on a journey we were not ready for. Yet to know we are not alone in our journey is a precious reassurance. Reminds me of the verse in Ecclesiastes, chapter 4, “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!”

The Lord is so good to give us friends who will walk through life with us. I am ever so grateful for the friends I have in my life. Truly. Be that as it may, I am privy to an even more wonderful relationship that never, ever fails me.

When life gets challenging, the Lord never leaves us. When we hit lows, He is ever present. Our “times are in His hands” it says in Psalm 31, verse 15. If our times are in His hands, we can believe He will help us through whatever we are experiencing. Discouragement, sadness, and any other negative emotion that we might allow to encompass us during any season of life, He removes because He is right there with us. “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?” (Psalm 139:7) In addition, all of our sweet precious moments of joy are in His hands as well. Those times that make us smile and rejoice, He orchestrates.

All events that concern us, and the timing of them, belong to Him. They are at God’s disposal. Matthew Henry, in his commentary on Psalm 31, states that “David didn’t prescribe to God, he subscribed to Him.” In other words, he agreed with the Lord and accepted God’s design for his life. All of it.

See, we are never alone no matter where we are in life. Our God is a faithful presence. And we can (I will!) rejoice in that! “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11)

UPDATE: Last week I was not able to put the linky up. I had an injury to my eye and was unable to handle staring at the computer screen or bright lights in general. I am doing much better and praising the Lord for healing.

NOTE: I have had the pleasure of participating in The Enchanting Rose Tea Cup & Mug Exchange more than once. So, I am just passing on the information below in case it is something you’d love to do. I may even participate this time myself.

Now I am ready to read what you have to share. So glad you stopped by.

Monday’s Musings #253 & Loving Others Like Jesus

Loving Others Like Jesus & Monday's Musings #253 | What Joy Is Mine

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, love is on the brain. But not just a romantic love but a selfless love. “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” (John 13:34) John 13, verse 34 are the words of Christ and He tells us how to love one another.

We love one another as we are loved by the Lord. In knowing we are loved by God, we are to share that love with others. Jesus says in verse 35, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35)  How we love others ought to reflect the love we receive from the Father. The word “ought” signals a duty. A duty is something one is required to do. It is a responsibility of moral obligation. We are commanded to “keep loving one another earnestly” just as Jesus loved us. (1 Peter 4:8)

The word earnestly means “with sincere and intense conviction.” What a powerful thought! To love others with sincere intention and an intense conviction. This is a Jesus-kind of love: to be intentional with the purpose of mirroring the love we receive from God. “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” (1 John 4:11) Remember what we discussed about the word “ought”? Again, we are to love one another because it is commanded by the Lord and demonstrated by Jesus.

How does this look? Well, it’s a kind word or a helping hand. It’s sharing and encouraging. It’s choosing to work out differences and bring about reconciliation. It’s putting others before yourself. It’s loving the unlovable. It’s loving the broken and lost. We must continue to work towards loving others the way Jesus loved. “Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.” (Romans 13:8)  “We love because he first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)

Hi friends. Welcome back. It’s time to share your posts! It’s a joy to have you here.
