Monday’s Musings #265 & May Daybook

MayDaybook

Today is June 4th, 2017

The weather is partly cloudy, windy and warm. Expecting some rain but probably won’t get it. The clouds are not close enough to give us rain.

Life is good. I’m in a season of busyness but not too bad. It’s enough to keep my mind occupied but not overwhelmed. These seasons are good and serve a purpose as do all seasons of life we walk through.

We survived the theater production of “Peter Pan and Wendy.” Our children are involved in a local student-run theater group. I oversee the meals and snacks for tech week and the shows. It’s exhausting but I have fabulous help from involved parents and love being around these kids, ages 5-25. Our daughter was prop manager this show and our son helped with the backstage crew. Yes, it’s a family affair. As it ought to be, in my opinion.

My garden is finally planted. We are growing squash, cherry tomatoes, green beans, Anaheim chile peppers, green bell pepper, jalapeno, basil, lime basil, lavender and rosemary. I hope to add another lavender plant as well as thyme and chocolate mint. We also planted flowers in some pots and I can’t wait for them to bloom. Do you have a garden? What do you grow?

Summer is practically here. Do you travel? Do you spend days at the pool? Do you have a reading agenda? We keep our summers low key since we do most of our traveling in fall and spring. But this summer is proving to be busier than usual by filling up with graduations, baby showers, birthday celebrations, another theater production (in which our daughter is acting in this time), a 3 week visit from a family friend, and a few other things. We are hoping to get in some family tennis matches and view some new movie releases, too. Summer is not my favorite season due to the heat YET I love the family things we do close to home.

My craft project for the next couple of weeks is to finish a baby quilt for our pastor’s wife. She is expecting a baby girl so, of course, pink is overrunning my dining room table. I am excited to be quilting again. And I am even more excited to bless their baby girl with a pretty blanket. Do you quilt? Or make blankets?

Healthwise, I am enjoying my walks outside. I have to go earlier with the sun making it too warm to walk later. I am opting to listen to audio books while walking instead of music. I get to “read” books which is not always something I find time to do. What are you reading?

I am thankful for plants to nurture and grow, for birthdays to celebrate life, for the ability to learn something new and for tacos!

A favorite quote: “You can see God from anywhere if your mind is set to love and obey Him.” (A.W. Tozer)

Here it is another week. Another Monday. Keep in mind that your smile looks good on you. Wear it boldly. And welcome back to another opportunity to encourage another. I am glad you’re here.

Monday’s Musings #259 & March Daybook

March Daybook & Monday's Musings #259 | What Joy Is Mine

Today is March 26, 2017.

The weather has cooled a bit and the wind has made his face more known. I’m not a big fan of strong winds but it is spring weather for us here and that means lots of wind. I tend to straighten my hair more when the winds are strong. Curly hair and wind are not good friends. I end up with more knots in my hair than I like.

I am missing our friend who came to visit. We enjoyed loving on him and showing him some cool things about NM. He was such a joy and I look forward to visiting with again soon, Lord willing. Best part was having my house full of family every day! I am definitely not ready for the empty nest season although it is not too far off. So, I am soaking in each day that my kids are here.

We are preparing for a marriage in our family. It’s an exciting time! It will be a simple wedding and taking place this summer. And we have another in a courtship. It blows my mind to be here in this season of life where our children are in relationships pursuing marriage. I can still remember them as wee ones needing their mama to tie their shoes or give them a glass of milk or hug away their fears. However, we love the two people God has put in our children’s lives and pray over them and our children daily.

Physically, I have changed up my exercise routine a bit. I am doing a 30 day challenge on my phone. It is strength training with spurts of aerobics. I needed something different as I was getting burnt out on what I was doing. Also, this new challenge is definitely challenging me. I like that. Makes me want to stick with it. I’ve also upped my food changes. Both combined, I’ve lost 5 pounds so far. I’ll take it.

At church today, the guest preacher taught on gluttony. He only used food and drink as items we can go overboard with in discussing gluttony. Yet as I was sitting there listening, I began to think of how gluttony can apply to other things as well. Television, computer time, and Facebook are some that come to mind. Even things like reading and exercise can be gluttonous. Any time we do something in excess (exceeding a prescribed or desirable amount), we run the risk of being gluttonous. However, gluttony can be conquered. The remedy is removing the gluttonous thing and living out Psalm 34:8, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” Put in the place of what excessively draws our heart, a focus on Christ and His love for us. Desire to spend time with the Lord and seek Him for discipline. Instead of running to those things that will cause us to stumble, we need to run our “strong tower” and find refuge. (Proverbs 18:10) These are my thoughts on gluttony.

Just thinking, April is practically here. Can you believe we are out of winter and into spring according to the calendar? This is the time I began planning my garden, which I will plant closer to May. We usually get one more freeze before planting can be done. I also go through my clothes before packing away my winter outfits. I’ve already been spring cleaning (began in January) so I will continue to work on those few last projects I have on my list. We also have a couple of trips planned we will need to finalize details on. What does spring hold for you?

I really enjoyed the live action movie, “Beauty and the Beast.” I liked the character development of some of the characters and the new song sung by the Beast is a new fav of mine. Beauty and the Beast retains the message of looking to the heart and not the appearance which I appreciated as well. The actors they chose I thought were good choices for the parts they played. I laughed, I got teary-eyed, I adored, and I am glad I went to see it. Now if you are against Disney or this movie, I respect that. However, I would recommend seeing the movie before passing judgement. You may be surprised.

I am thankful for sweet people in my life, cupcakes, opportunities to serve others, and sunshine!

Favorite sayings: “Impress the young convert from the very beginning with the coviction that God has called him into His kingdom to struggle with the corruptions of his heart.” (William B. Sprague)

How are you today? And what will you share? I am glad you are here.

Monday’s Musings #256 & February Daybook

February Daybook & Monday's Musings #256 | What Joy Is Mine

Today is March 5th, 2017.

The weather is cool because the wind blowing is chilly. It’s a high of 68 degrees but feels like 50 degrees.

The book I am reading “The Pursuit of God” by A.W. Tozer, is one I am really enjoying. Some of you have probably read it but it is new to me. My book list is long so I am glad to be getting to this one.

A craft project I finished in two afternoons were these Mickey and Minnie pillows for the sofa in our Disneyland room. It was such a treat to be sewing again. It’s been a long time since I’ve sat down at my sewing machine and made anything. I used to quilt a lot but have gotten away from it. Maybe I will be able to pick it up again.

A new skill I am learning is calligraphy and hand lettering. If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, I sometimes post my progress. Practice makes better and I can see growth each time I sit down to write. I love this new skill and look forward to the time I can sit and work on it.

I am looking forward to a visit from a friend of our family’s. He will be spending a week with us. We hope to show him some cool things about our city and state. But mostly, we are looking forward to our time with him.

Healthwise, I have been sticking to my workout regimen of cardio and strength training. Sometimes I have to push myself to get it done but when I’m finished, I love that I did something good for my health. With the weather warming up, going on walks is given. I  love walking for exercise!

A favorite pastime is antiquing. I love looking through old forgotten things. I have a favorite antique store I visit every few months. I spread out my visits so I see new things. I recently found a wingback chair I adored. I have been looking for a “new” chair for my sitting area in our bedroom. I was ready to be rid of the 11 year old chaise chair. A trip to my favorite antique store lead me to the chair that I’ve been waiting for. Here is a photo of the chair! I absolutely love it!!

I am watching Star Trek: The Next Generation series with our youngest son. Well, he’s over 20 years old but still the youngest of our two boys. We are presently in season 3 and moving right along. We usually will try to catch two or three episodes in a row if we can. Some episodes we’ve had to skip due to content but other than those we are enjoying the series. It’s been a long while since I’ve watched it.

I am grateful for time with my children, for this blog and all who visit, and for the ability to learn something new.

A favorite quote:God’s aim in all His doings of grace is to ‘hide pride from man'; to hinder boasting; to keep the sinner humble.” (Horatius Bonar)

Another link up is here. It humbles me to see how the Lord has grown this community. I appreciate you being here.

Monday’s Musings #252 & January Daybook

January Daybook & Monday's Musings #252 | What Joy Is Mine

Today is January 29, 2017.

The weather is really nice. Not too cold and sunny. Supposed to have nice sunny weather all week.

I am presently enjoying a quiet afternoon at home. It’s the Lord’s Day and it ought to be restful. We’re watching a 1936 movie with our kids at the moment. Do you like old movies?

I finished my goal setting earlier this month. So far, I have been able to work toward some of them. I like to do a monthly check in to see where I am with each one. This helps me stay focused and intentional.

We have been tentatively planning our future trips. Planning early helps us afford it financially as well as encourage us to hold each detail in prayer. It is my prayer we get to do all we are hoping to.

Some of the books I am hoping to read this year are in my hands now. I am starting with “Does Grace Grow Best In Winter?” by Ligon Duncan. This book answers the questions: What is suffering for? What does it look like from the standpoint of God’s sovereignty? It looks like a quick read with, hopefully, a good message.

Our family bible time consists of two things. We are reading through the New Testament using this plan. We are also continuing our study through The Shorter Catechism using Training Hearts, Training Minds. We’re on question #42 this week. We often have good biblical discussion and I am loving this time with my kids.

I am excited about baseball season! With the Super Bowl this upcoming weekend, I am ready to close out football and watch some baseball. Do you like baseball? Do you have a favorite team?

Spring cleaning has begun in our home. I’ve tackled the master bath and my bookshelf in our bedroom. I’ve also begun to clean out and reorganize our pantry. I am excited to be making good progress in decluttering and reorganizing areas in our home. Spring cleaning doesn’t have to happen in spring friends.

At our church, we are starting up our community groups once more. We will be in a different group and are excited to see how God will grow us up in Him during our time together. It’s a blessing to fellowship with fellow believers.

I am grateful for a new year, for goals to work towards, for a God who hears my prayers, and for praise.

A favorite quote: My brethren, let me say, be like Christ at all times. Let us take care that we exhibit our Master, and not ourselves—so that we can say, “It is no longer I that live, but Christ that lives in me.”  (Charles Spurgeon)

Monday’s Musings #236 & September Daybook

September Daybook & Monday's Musings | What Joy Is Mine

Today is October 1st. It’s Saturday and I am finally having some time to write here.

The weather is a warm 72 degrees and slightly breezy. Fall is in the air as the leaves are gradually changing from the tops of the mountains and working down to us below.

I am thrilled for my sister as she is now married to the man she loves. Her wedding was yesterday and we have been in wedding mode all week prepping and preparing. Needless to say, its been a crazy week!

I am excited to edit another wedding I shot last weekend. They were such a fun and cute couple. Below is a sneak preview of the wedding I shot in August. I enjoyed being a part of their magical day, too.

Monday's Musings | What Joy Is Mine

This weekend I am going away with my love for our honeymoon. We never took one when we got married 25 years ago so decided to celebrate our 25th anniversary with a honeymoon. Not going anywhere spectacular but we are going somewhere beautiful and being together is really all we are wanting. And our anniversary isn’t officially until November but the season is pretty right now so why wait?

Last Sunday, we witnessed 9 baptisms in our church. What an awesome event to see more people join the family of God. Praise the Lord!

Our trip to Kansas and Missouri was so awesome and fun. Our son performed well but didn’t place. And he handled it with much grace. Visiting our friends in Missouri was the highlight of our trip. My husband and our kids even went up into the arch in St. Louis! Below are some photos capturing our fun.

Monday's Musings | What Joy Is Mine

A new experience for me was trying homemade pumpkin pasta. And let me say, yes! We will be eating that again. The flavor was so delightful and how perfect for autumn. Have you ever had pumpkin pasta?

Our daughter was blessed with a car as a gift! God is good. She has been saving her pennies to buy one and a family member gave her theirs and its a nice running vehicle. The only thing she has to fix is the air conditioner and she has the funds to do that since they gifted it to her. How awesome is that? However, I will miss our time in the car as I was the one who drove her where she needed to go. It’s bittersweet, you know?

This week is the beginning of the balloon fiesta. For the next ten days hot air balloons will grace our skies daily. It is a beautiful sight to behold.

I am grateful for God’s provision, my husband, photography, and morning devotionals.

Favorite quote:It is not left to our own option whether we shall praise God or not. Praise is God’s most righteous due, and every Christian, as the recipient of His grace, is bound to praise God from day to day.” ~Charles Spurgeon

Are you ready to share a favorite post? Are you ready to encourage another? Well, then let’s get to it. Thank you for stopping by today.
